Cycling in Brisbane Australia
Time for a training update.
Last week was mostly successful in my daily training, a couple of days where the warm bed was too tempting over the cold rain outside. Need some improvement.
On Wednesday night I went to a Bikram yoga session. I used to practice Yoga a few years ago when I first started racing and I found it really helped my riding. I've not done it in a long time, and doing the 90 minute class in a hot room was quite a shock. Still, it had the right effect, every muscle in my body knowing it had been through a thorough workout, and lots of stretching of all the muscles used on the bike.
The long weekend didn't see me out on the bike every day, but I got a couple of decent long rides in.
Sunday I headed out towards the bay, Wynnum, Manly, Cleveland and back. I felt pretty terrible for the first hour before realising that Hot Cross Buns and Chocolate really aren't great training food. Once I'd demolished the peanut butter sandwich I'd brought with me things got better, and the last 10 kms of the 67km ride had me feeling much stronger than I would normally feel after that sort of distance.
I decided to see today what else I could do and set out along a similar route with plans to extend it out to 100kms. Of course I once again forgot the lesson about Hot Cross Buns, but did bring supplies with me. I was riding into some fairly tiring winds for the first 40 kms out to the bay, but felt pretty strong for it. On the way back I headed along Logan rd and past Mt Gravatt. Seemed a waste to pass a road like that and not climb it, so did that too.
100.3km by the time I got home in the rain, feeling good for it. The Sprint 8 intervals really help with the strength and recovery ability, I'm sold on them and I can't help but think the one Yoga session helped too. I'm feeling like I'm on the right path with this!
Maps and stats for the rides are on Garmin Connect (Sunday, Tuesday).

Back out this morning, managed to bound out of bed at 5:15. Couldn't decide whether to do my regular scheduled intervals or a very easy spin to loosen up the legs from yesterday. So I decided to ask my legs and see what they thought..... they decided that an easy spin was in order.
Unfortunately the track at Murarrie was half underwater, then it started raining. So I was wet. Then I rode over a sharp sliver of stone on the way back and got a flat. So it wasn't the most fun ride ever.
The scrambled eggs I cooked for myself when I got home made everything better though.
Also, I have to say that the Brisbane roadie community are a friendly bunch. Every one that rode past me as I was changing my tube called out to see if I was ok or needed help! It's something I do a lot too so it's always nice to see the offer reciprocated.
Yoga tonight!
