Cycling in Brisbane Australia

Note to self: Secure blinkies more securely for unexpected rough terrain!

Just returned from my first ride to Wynnum, think I got some nice photos; but as I got back towards the CBD to rest my bike and take more photos I noticed I was missing something - the "clunk" I heard a while earlier when going over some rough railway tracks around Wynnum or Lytton turns out to have been my rear blinky (I'll check my GPS log soon to get a clearer idea).

First thought was "bummer, looks like I'll be buying another blinky today/tomorrow" but then I realised I'd also have to buy rechargeable batteries again so that is just not on! It's probably going to get crushed by traffic but it looks like I'll just have to attempt a search mission tomorrow morning and otherwise enjoy the ride.

Meanwhile in the remote chance anyone reading this has happened to have picked up a "NR" (NightRider) rear blinky near some tracks out that way, that would be good news. :)

So note to self and others for the future: if one is to attach rear lights to a new pannier rack, do not just clip the light on a cable tie without having it properly fastened down (I should have tied down the whole clip instead of just the light to retain quick release functionality).

And I wasn't even going to keep the lights attached for today's ride, but decided to leave them there for a "complete" bike - d'oh!

Update: The mounting bracket feels quite secure now since deciding to simply go overboard with the cable ties. Will have to try the inner tube trick on my old bulky camera + Gorillapod on the bars next time I experiment with video to improve grip and reduce vibration.

Ah I hadn't thought of that Doc - I'll have to give it a go; cheers! I do like the stock mounting bracket for its security (both in attachment and theft prevention) but as with most brackets, they are either too big or too small if one isn't going to mount on the saddle post or bars. Just as well I picked up the "free" (discarded) old tube the same day I dropped blinky. :)

Uh, took some pictures of it too -

I cut up an old tube into strips and use the rubber wrapped tightly around the right-side pannier rack leg to 'pad' out the tube enough to tighten the light mount to - works well, but not much good if you use the right-hand pannier. On the plus side, you can screw the light mount on tight, yet it gives if you bump it, or somehow manage to land the bike on it - and it is fairly vibration proof.

Excellent!

Yes, I did! All intact and working - it was resting safely on the rail sleepers at the Pritchard St / Rail crossing in Lytton (I of course retrieved it with caution). Traffic wasn't too bad, came in waves as expected; picked the best lines I could. Would visit again - will have to make time for fish & chips next time. :)

Here are some of the pics that turned out ok. Wynnum Jetty, Gateway Bridge, Brisbane CBD - all under smoke haze today.

In other news, check out some of the fires (or at least smoke) spotted by NASA today: http://lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov/imagery/subsets/?subset=Australia6.2011261.terra.1km&vectors=fires%2Bcoast%2Bborders
