Cycling in Brisbane Australia
I used to be a keen casual rider. Canberra was where it all started, with its beautiful paths through beautiful gardens.
Since moving to several different states, the interest in riding had dwindled, coupled with the fact that Adelaide was far too dangerous to even think about getting on a bike. Melbourne wasn't much better.
Since moving to Brisbane - I have decided to get back on the bike. After a recent kidney transplant and a few years (all my life actually) of being sick, I took the bike out for a quick spin to the local shops. Almost dying in the process from exhaustion, I started doing a bit of research on getting a little help from good ol' electricity.
Finding a few different options:
Buying a fully fledged eBike and spending up to $2000
Buying a "fully fledged" ebike and spending up to $680... or
Converting my bike over to electric.
I love my bike - 2008 (I think) Avanti Atomic. So I decided to convert my bike over to an eBike
This is what I went with: Y electric conversion kit
I'm still waiting on the item to be dispatched - and I'm not holding my breath.
Stay tuned, as I will be documenting the conversion and posting images as well as any issues I come across.

Comment by Doc Embrey on January 12, 2012 at 9:03pm I am looking forward to your blogs - a few years ago, when I decided to ride into work in the CBD instead of just to the nearest train station, I got an electric bike from a local company - and it was brilliant. The motor bolted on in front of the crank and all the gears were useable with or without the motor. The bike was one of the most comfortable I have ever ridden too.
Sadly the bike was 'nicked' from under my house, and I donated the LiFePo battery to a fellow at work who built it into an electric bike for his daughter.
Mostly, I used the motor for going up hills to make the battery last for all the hills on the way home (the suburb I live in is not called Arana Hills for no reason) and still had to pedal. I could ride up Kedron Brook Road at over 30KmH, but Fagan Street at Herston is steeper and the 200W motor didn't have the torque to motor up that without a lot of help, but it got me fit and I liked it very much. Sure, I had to ride with my old kidneys as I didn't have new ones like you, but you don't get to pick do you ;)
It's a terrific way to get fitness and health back!

There are a couple of ebike people on this site so I'm sure you'll get some advice if you need it.
