So apparently construction of the St Lucia Bikeway along the esplanade is finally complete and officially opened on Saturday morning, 8th October - although I'm not sure whether the storms affected…Continue

A "short" summary on my first (metric) "century"

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 10:00pm 0 Comments

Went to Redcliffe, Airport DFO and returned home via Kedron Brook Rd / Aberleigh Rd (Herston) today.

Herston: Noticed quite a bit of new paint (compare the two most recent imagery sets). I like the placement of some of the BAZ symbols - some are actually in the middle of the lane rather than parking lane. I was still content to go off to the…

Took my bike to the market for the first time, and my first impressions of CityCycle:

So in the past fortnight, I bought a $50 pannier rack (the one that every bike store here sells) and received my Take A Look mirror in the post (I have it mounted to my visor with two cable ties as my glasses frames are too thin - Amazon has some descriptive reviews and user photos, but they don't ship here; some local bike stores here also stock it but I don't know if they do both sizes, I have the compact…

Note to self: Secure blinkies more securely for unexpected rough terrain!

Posted on September 18, 2011 at 12:00pm 9 Comments

Just returned from my first ride to Wynnum, think I got some nice photos; but as I got back towards the CBD to rest my bike and take more photos I noticed I was missing something - the "clunk" I heard a while earlier when going over some rough railway tracks around Wynnum or Lytton turns out to have been my rear blinky (I'll check my GPS log soon to get a clearer idea).

First thought was "bummer, looks like I'll be buying another blinky today/tomorrow" but then I realised I'd…

Raymond replied to Chris Cox's discussion 'Coxy's daily rant'
No one is calling on banning cars or forcing the price of fuel to go up. Cars already have access virtually everywhere. Fuel is kept cheap artificially - how is that fair? If the price soars, it's not actually the cyclist's fault. So why…

What you think there is actually a myth - good cycle paths are actually not slow. Please read that post and its references - it's been linked to you before. Bad paths might be slow, but so are bad roads (congested/door…

So are you subtly accusing me - through bringing up the bizarre topic (in this context) of hippies and Greenpeace - of thinking in black and white and/or extremist terms? Relative to what? Your second part of that comment doesn't convince me…

I have a better idea - mandatory dash board cams! Maybe it would be 'easier' than building proper infrastructure (i.e., rethinking the high cost of free parking, etc)? From my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong), new cars already…

I see you are continuing your same conflicted ideologies ("bad driver good driver, bad cyclist good cyclist!") - so what exactly is it that you want, and how are we to achieve it? Are you thinking of the same type of oil crises that we…

Rage advisory, so lets set the music while I'm at it: Matrix Reloaded film track (Linken Park, Marilyn Manson, et al. Just witnessed the most despicable bullying I've seen in months. At approximately 17:50 today, I heard a rude honk from…

Plus it's the same argument used by some people who punch (and kill) others or fire a gun to "teach them a lesson"! Unfortunately it can't be assumed that *all* drivers have good intentions (pretty difficult to have sound…

Esperia Aria (2011, blue) - my first self-funded bike!

It's just a low-budget hybrid (sans suspension), selected in March 2011 for exploring, sightseeing, "commuting" but above all, fun. :)

Most recent addition: Milk crate! Don't know why I didn't attach one earlier (thanks Dirk!)

Some of my other favourite accessories: Topeak Mini Morph pump and my "Take A Look" mirror, compact version; Epic Cycles in Paddington would stock it. Peruse http://delicious.com/protiotype/mirrors for more detail or just ask me. :)
About Me :
Not a perfectionist, pedantic or overly cautious - I think my attributes are sufficient for biking in Brisbane. :)

Quite happy to go slow. Contrary to popular local belief, sweating (while at times fun), isn't mandatory. It's a bit like jogging whilst seated - but still much easier than walking!

Would love to gently introduce more friends and family to bicycling and break some common preconceptions.

I'm somewhat addicted to track stands. It's the only trick I can do (well it was, until I finally learned basic no-hands riding..). If you catch me hovering about, I'm not intending to be a show-off; it's just addicting and fun to practise it whenever I get the chance. Good skills training. :p

Here's a non-exhaustive list of pages that have helped me: http://delicious.com/protiotype/bicycling+toplinks
