Great Victorian Bike Ride on a Recumbent Trike 2014

Posted on December 9, 2014 at 4:00pm 14 Comments

Thought I would write a little Melvyn like report on the GVBR 2014 which I just completed last weekend.

The route this year started in Albury NSW and finished in Lilydale Vic.  It went through the NE of Victoria, where there is the  high country , snowfields, beautiful valleys, wineries and generally beautiful bucolic scenery abounds.

Unfortunately this years ride was marred by the death of a 65yo rider who clipped a wheel and fell under a passing truck about…

Hi Terry,

I left more details about me and my bike with as a comment under the pic I added, but I would love to try some trikes before buying one, as I am not sure what I will or won't be able to do.  Do the petals have straps to keep your feet in place?  Does my height matter given that I am only 5'3?

Thanks for leaving me a comment!

Hey Terry,

You should be aware that your red/white velocar is nearly invisible, particularly on the bikeway when I'm just looking out for 'normal' bikes.  Pls get a flag or something.

Also, pls don't go onto the oncoming lane to pass others and assume that any oncoming cyclists have seen you.  I hadn't and we nearly had a head on this morning.

I hope you will take this in the constructive manner it is intended.

<quote: I have been looking at the Scorpion FX and FS, I have a couple of Greenspeed trikes, one of which my daughter rides occasionally. She is finding the mesh seat a bit uncomfortable-I was wondering if a hardshell seat would be more comfortable for her-do your Scorpions have hardshell seats and if so how do you find them for comfort? HP Velotechnik make a fantastic product-have you been happy with them?>

Hello Terry and thanks for the welcome. I'm looking forward to seeing other 'bents in Brisbane. Regards the Greenspeed mesh seat...we do have mesh seats on our Scorpions but I don't know if they are anything like the Greenspeed seats. Our seats do act something like bucket seats because of the stretch of the material. I have built a "hard shell" seat for my trike so can offer some thoughts on it.  A hard seat doesn't "grip" your bottom and back like a bucket type seat.  Therefore you don't feel as secure on it but you can shift your weight around more easily and quickly for cornering.  A hardshell is also "hard" so is less comfortable than a mesh unless well contoured.  Your daughter might be experiencing the dreaded "recum-butt" which lessens with experience. Ask her where the seat is uncomfortable and see if that offers any clues.  On the other hand all chair/seats are very individualistic. You might try making pads for the seat that can be adjusted or shifted around till they are comfortable.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Terry.

I took your advice and posted an ad on Bike Exchange for the Optima Lynxx recumbent.  I'll also put one up on Brisbane Cyclist and hopefully the bike will find a new home.

Hey Terry,

Just did a quick browse through your pics. Where have you been touring in Aust and how did you find the roads?
