Bikes without lights

Posted on May 10, 2014 at 4:26pm 6 Comments

It's that time of the year again when we are regularly riding home in the dark.  It still astounds me that there are so many cyclists willing to ride without lights.  I'm not just talking about poor students on dodgy bikes but there are plenty of expensive carbon racers out there who are riding sans lights.

Please make sure you are not one of these people.

It is so dangerous to themselves and other road/path users that I am now the grumpy cyclist yelling at people to get…

Hi Peter,

Just a few additional thoughts on your original comments-

"You should be aware that your red/white velocar is nearly invisible"

Well that is a first, in over 7000km on the road and bikepaths, I have never had anyone tell me I'm invisible. Judging by all the people who comment, photo, video, wave , yell, cheer etc I suspect I am quite visible to other cyclists and road users.

"....don't assume that any oncoming cyclists have seen you.  I hadn't and we nearly had a head on this morning."

I never assume 'normal' bikes have seen me, often they don't, not because I'm invisible, but because they are looking down at their front wheel or only a few metres ahead in typical road bike rider posture.

Velomobile riders have excellent forward and rear view of the road, as a result of their recumbent position, we will see you a long time before you see us. I don't know the circumstances of your encounter this morning, but I am sure it would not have been a reckless passing move. There may have been a reason, there are always 2 sides to the story.

This is not meant as a tit for tat, but just a few observations from our side that you may be interested in hearing.

Hope to see you on the road some time,

Cheers Terry.

Hi Peter,

Always happy to discuss issues, however on this occasion I will plead mistaken identity. I wasn't out this morning, I live on the northside.

I suggest you direct your comments to either Rhubarb or Paul Martin the other owners of red/white velomobiles.

Cheers Terry.
