I just recently moved here from overseas, but prior to coming I sold my rowing arm cycle that I have ridden for over 20 years.
About Me :
I have just returned to the gorgeous city of Brisbane and am looking to get back into triking. I have some mobility impairment, so in the past I have ridden arm cycles (both rowing and more common recumbent arm bikes and neither being electric assist). Currently, I am looking to try any leg and arm alternatives that don't require heaps of balance, so that I can get out riding again!

Leg and arm trike options and distributors

Posted on January 1, 2015 at 4:34pm 4 Comments

Hi folks,

As several of you know, I am looking to find the perfect trike in the new year.  Several of you have provided some suggestions, and I am hoping there are others out there as well. Given this, I wondered, is there a place where someone can find a list of trike options and where/how to get them?  If not, I would love if folks would add items they know of in this blog post, so that it can easily be referred.

I am happy to consider things that need to be brought in from…

Hi Jess, I think that when Mary Martin has her trike back you should give it a good look. It has changed her life for the better in so many ways.

Also have a look at Terry's Greenspeed trike. You'll find it a lot of fun to ride. To keep your feet on the pedals, which actually is an issue on trikes on rough terrain/roads, spd shoes and pedals, or toeclips on the pedals, are used. Terry's has the spd pedals.

I recommend giving Terry's trike a ride, even just around the local paths.

All the best, and if there is anything I can do to help, let me know.

Hi Jess, I have 2 Greenspeed recumbents, one of which is the small frame size-my daughter, who also has some balance issues, rides this. They have an adjustable boom that can be moved to fit various sized riders.

I have some pedals with straps that I can fit on the trike, however it is currently set up with clipless pedals, as my daughter's foot came off the strapped pedal one day and went under the cross bar causing a bit of bruising-I am a fan of clipless pedals!

I could bring this trike for you to have a tryout sometime if you wish, I am on the northside at Carseldine-let me know!

Hi Jess.

I pass Nundah Crit track frequently. A meet up there with others would be good and you can check out multiple trikes at the same time.

What suburb are you in?

Welcome Jess, I reckon you'll find the people here a good bunch. They are mostly happy to give some of their time and advice and rides on their bikes.

Perhaps you might try an electric trike? Not only are trikes almost impossible to fall out off accidentally, the electric assist on a standard trike might be all you need on either a pedal trike or a hand powered trike. There is a fellow I often see on the paths who rides hand cranked trikes - I don't think he frequents these forums, but he is known to a few here so I guess I could bail him up next time I see him and maybe he might be happy to give you advice or a go on his trike. He probably has some insight on hand powered trikes of which we have no idea.

Also, Mary Martin hereabouts recently got an electric pedal driven trike and seemed pretty pleased with it. Mary may have some insight about the matter which the rest of us overlook too.

Hi Jess and welcome to Brisbane,

A recumbent trike may be worth a try, no balance issues and possibly doable if you can pedal. There are a few members here with trikes (me included) who I am sure would be happy for you to try out their trikes. We have a criterium track at Nundah which would be perfect for test rides.

Let me know if you would like to try a trike.
