North Brisbane Cycleway Campaign

It's taking too long for the safe, convenient bicycle connection to Brisbane's north to be completed.  This group is for people who want to lobby for faster action on the northern missing link.

I saw this sign on my way home Thursday.  Looks like the path alongside Gilchrist Tce is getting some lights.

I went to take some photos of Bowen Park this afternoon and got all excited when I saw a lot of orange fences and equipment at the southern end by Gate 6.  Had they started construction of Stage 1A-Section 2? No!!! They were putting Christmas lights in the large Hoop Pine which is so delicate and heritage listed you can't put a bike path near it. Obviously not heritage listed enough that you can't have cables and lights festooned all over it.

Thanks BCC.  Last night a woman with her young children in the car came out of the Chalk St slip lane, and then overtook me at the same time as I was turning right onto the Fraser St bridge (and indicating).  She gunned it and ended up on the wrong side of the double lines on Fraser St, cut in front of me (MGIF) and braked hard to save running up the back of another car already stopped on the bridge at the Hudson St stop sign.  Words were spoken.  We both turned left to go north up Hudson St. Still impatient, she overtook me again but luckily the driver coming the other way out of the narrow laneway behind Wooloowin Station had the good sense to come to a dead stop to avoid a head on collision with her.

Madness.  Thanks BCC for designing what is now the worst part of my daily commute.

I was nearly taken out by a 4X4 on the corner of Bridge Street just by Wooloowin Station.

That looks like an intentional disregard of your space there. That driver had no  reason to cut the corner, he/she is not in a race and the traffic ahead was not moving going anywhere fast.

You are probably correct Geoff, but I suspect the police at the Hendra Station are getting fed up with me rolling up all the time with videos of negligent drivers. The issue is really about poor infrastructure.  How many drivers have to be fined before everyone gives cyclists the space they deserve. If BCC/TMR fixed the bike lane (NBB Stage 2) then the problem would go away.

You need to go to the local police station for that area and provide them with a copy of that video and ask them to press charges against the driver for infringing on the 1 metre space you are entitled to.

It's about time BCC/TMR did something about this green painted strip that does nothing to protect cyclists.  How hard would it be to add a concrete kerb along the outside of the bike lane to keep cars away.

I will be sending a fix-o-gram to BCC and copy the video to Tim Nicholls.

The Ekka ride must be close to opening this week! I went past this morning and they have painted lines and installed some sections of fence, started to do a general site clean too. Another 2 days and they should be done I reckon

Coming home yesterday evening I watched an elderly female pedestrian negotiate this upgrade. She tried to cross the bridge via the northern footpath. She got to the footpath closed sign, and o watched here try to figure out what to do. After looking around she realised there was no other alternative, not even if she retraced her steps. So she was forced to walk the wrong way along the roadway, squeezing past the plastic barriers, while cars came at her around the blind corner. Then she crossed the road and waited on the painted island for a break I. Traffic going the other way. (There was also a cyclist waiti on the same painted Island waitng to go the wrong way down the one way bit in front of the fire station). It occurred to me that the continuation of the footpath and the extra pedestrian crossing that CBD BUG had suggested to the project team, would have aligned perfectly with where this woman was trying to go. Without it, there's no pedestrian route from East to west.
