Cargo Bikes

More and more cargo bikes are available in Australia these days as people realise it is a great way to carry children, groceries and other loads. Some versions even have electric assistance.

If you're thinking of a new car - get a 'bicycle SUV' instead! You won't regret it and if you want a great workout, just load it up.

Adelaide cyclists have put together a cargo bike meet.  Anyone have some spare time on their hands and keen to organise something similar in Brisbane?

I finally found a bike to suit all the needs, Picked up a new Zigo from ebay (2nd hand yet to be unpacked)

Took it for a small test ride and looks good. Hoping to ride the kids in it to Pushies Galore on the weekend.

For kids plus groceries I think you'll be wanting either. 'Long John' bicycle bakfiets (box bike) - like the Cabby or the Bullit.... OR a tricycle box bike like a Danish Christiana bike.

The advantage of the Christiana bike is that you don't have to balance it and can simply stop going up hills. The disadvantage is that it isn't as fast or as stable at speed.

Hi Guys, Does anyone have one? I'm looking at getting a cargo bike for my kids... lots of options out there... can't really decide if I want 3 wheel or a 2 wheel version

We've given up on trying to get them onto balance bikes... ;)

Why train on your lightest bike? :)

For those of you who might be worried about your street cred ;)

...and it is good power training!

Another great story on cargo bikes - this time the Christiana Bicycle (Danish). I have seen one of these tootling about New Farm.

The Times highlights the role of Christiania bikes

Really, how safe are your kids asked The Times? “I feel most comfortable cycling with my children in front of me. I can see that they are safe and chat to them. They like sitting next to each other – well, most of the time – and playing.”

I think this is really what makes them better than trailers for children.
