Share you electric-bike friendly routes

So an electric bike means there are maybe a few paths that you'll take that a regular cyclist wouldn't because they just want to relax and go for a ride and not go up and down hills in a puff. What…Continue

Service station pumps often don't inflate to high enough pressures for good quality bike tyres.

Comment by Henk Spierings 4 hours ago

@Aaron, Thanks for the tips. I tried and failed a few times, then realised that the tyres are fully inflated, and the back pressure on the valve is not going to allow it to open for a small puff from my Gazelle pump. So it would be good in an emergency only.

@Thea and Aaron, I'll invest in a floor pump and valves and fittings. Hopefully 99Bikes will have them, if not, I'll duck down to NFB next week.

@Kisita.... Ha ha ha, I used a petrol station pump years ago and blew up my tyre, and got a serious fright. But I'll give it another go one day.

Have a nice weekend all, this is such excellent weather for a scenic ride, and a good black coffee. And thanks for the input. Love this forum.

Hi Henk, I'm still new to Gazelle world butjust thought I would mention that NFB also those valve adaptors that Aaron mentioned and they are really handy things because they also fit the air pumps at petrol stations. I never realised you could use petrol station air pumps to pump up bicycle tyres. We live and learn...

Ditto to what Aaron said. I bought one of those pumps and they are just amazing to use. No effort at all and totally worth the $90. NFB had some in stock when I was there last Sunday.

Hi Henk,

I assume you're talking about the pump that comes with the Gazelle.

The trick is to make sure the pump hole is firmly pressed fully on to the valve (after removing the valve dust cap of course).

Then, at the end of the stroke when the pump is fully compressed, if you push a little harder you will feel the pump 'break through' a point of resistance.  It may be that you are not compressing the pump enough, i.e. not finishing the full stroke.

In all honesty. The Gazelle pump is not ideal.  It is really a back-up, in-case- of-emergency pump.

I suggest purchasing a proper floor stand pump.

The valves on the Gazelle are Dunlop valves, slightly different from Presta. However if you also purchase (for a few cents) a Presta to Schrader valve adaptor, any standard floor pump will work.  Just make sure you purchase a valve adaptor with a rubber seal, otherwise it may leak air when attached to the Dunlop valve.

New Farm Bikes used to stock floor pumps which they claimed worked for all three valves (Dunlop, Schrader and Presta) so that might be an easier, albeit more expensive option.

Call for help. Gazelle help. People, I can't get my pump to push air into my tyres. I get the pump to sit on the valve neatly, but all I'm doing with each stroke of the pump is compressing air inside it. I have tried pushing down on the pump in case it needs pressure to open the valve, but that doesn't work either. Remembering that I'm not technically competent, is there something I am missing here? Pump, valve, air etc. Does not compute.

@Shaun. Well let's just say that after an incident with me, the Gazelle, a camera pack on the carrier, a bump in the transition from one piece of roadway to another, and a bad case of 'getthereitis', a small breakage happened. It's all fixed now, and a credit to the solid construction of all things Gazelle.

Who owns the electric bike that was parked near Medina at the bottom of the Story Bridge on Saturday afternoon? It was very clean. No mud splats like I have on mine.

What was wrong with the Gazelle Henk?

Comment by Henk Spierings on Monday

Thanks to Matt at Pushys for fixing my little problem. While I was without the Gazelle, I took my old Trek for a run. What a tinny piece of crap. Light, no substance, cheap metal, nasty, rough gear changes, piddly little valves on skinny tyres, and the chain needed about a litre of oil to boot. Think I'll have to sell it or give it away.
