Brisbane Cyclist

Cycling in Brisbane Australia

Some interesting (mostly upsetting) comments from the Brisbane reddit

http://www.reddit.com/r/brisbane/comments/ob83t/if_you_ride_your_bi...

Definitely a painful read - shows the mentality of a typical motorist. While they may just be words, when they constantly mention running over cyclists that are 'getting in my way on purpose' one has to worry...

I overdid my reddit sessions a month or two ago, and definitely noticed how less tolerant /r/brisbane and /r/australia is - particularly after spending a bit of time on /r/bicycling (which still isn't that perfect, but being predominantly American, it results in a type of "strong" mentality from what they have to deal with).

It was becoming a problem trying to fix or at least communicate some better understanding and that was sapping my spirits. Realised I was better off trying to ignore it (all of reddit) as much as possible and focus on the people closer to me first (Facebook; of which I'm very fortunate to have a lot of very bright contacts, BC, and other people I'm more likely to meet). It's not like I won't find out the good stuff eventually through friends anyway so there was no point trying to be first at finding or posting gold via reddit.

Many of the sub-reddits have probably grown too big and you'll naturally end up some form of Ltd News / Myspace effect. Perhaps the best thing is to let it fester as quickly as possible because any energy expended there could be better used elsewhere. It pains me to admit my eventual disliking of reddit but I've always tried to realise that with any anonymous internet forum; things can get pretty messy once it gets too big. Occasionally, randoms will appreciate your work but most of the time a lot of the effort gets wasted to the trolls or those who don't want to think!
