Cycling in Brisbane Australia
Today in the Coffee Appreciation Society group, David mentioned a Redcliffe Peninsula Loop ride.
It piqued my interest, and I went looking for some maps online. Then CamDS posted a question about it too, so it's probably worth bringing out!
I found some maps of the Zupps ride, one starting from Southbank, one from Aspley. Is this what people talk about when they talk about a Redcliffe loop ? Is it doable without the Zupps bunch around you ?
Anyone want to talk us through it ?

I live in Brighton and do the version 2 redcliffe loop alot, good little ride. Watch out for the roadworks at the redcliffe jetty though. I'll have to try the longer one at some stage
I also do a 13k sandgate loop (covers brighton, sandgate and shorncliffe) which is great for practising 40k TT (3 laps) as there is little traffic interuption. http://www.bikemap.net/route/945340
Permalink Reply by David on May 2, 2011 at 9:27pm This the route I take...I start at Northlakes, can be done in either direction, however I usually travel anti-clockwise so I get the boring bit ( Kallangur, Strathpine etc) done first and have worked up a coffee thirst by Redcliffe or Scarbrough.
Thanks David!
So going off that and the other maps I found, from here I would head up Gympie rd, do your loop (mostly) and come back Sandgate, or join back to Gympie and come back that way.
Coffee in Redcliffe sounds like a good idea.
Permalink Reply by David on May 2, 2011 at 9:41pm I would come back down Sandgate Rd...avoid Gympie Rd at the moment its a mess.
As an example if we are heading into Southbank we take Sandgate Rd to Nundah, then around the back of Clayfield to Racecourse Rd, Kingsford Smith Drive into the Valley, through the CBD to the Goodwill Bridge and into Southbank.

I have been looking for a route for commuting from Deagon to South bank (safest/shortest way). This is will be my first commute so I don't mind going a bit further to avoid traffic.
At present I'm thinking down Sandgate Rd to Toombul Shops and then down Nudgee Road to Kingsford Smith.
Two questions though...
How do you get from Toombul road to Nudgee Rd on a bike safely?
And what's the route from Kingsford Smith through the CBD to the Goodwill Bridge?
Thanks.
cycling along Sandgate Rd has recently been prohibited on the overpass at Virginia, reportedly for safety reasons. So if you go that way you'll need to turn into Toombul Rd then either double back or keep going up to Melton Rd or Nudgee Rd.
As a balance between safety and convenience, and to avoid traffic, perhaps you can follow Sandgate Rd to Zillmere Rd, then go down Bilsen Rd to the Downfall Creek bike path. Follow that through to Chermside, then follow the existing Council route through to Kedron Brook bike path, then Kedron Brook Rd to Herston. The short answer is you can't avoid traffic on the northside, but this is 'reasonably' direct and most of it is bike lanes, BAZs or offroad shared bike paths.

Forgot to mention from Herston there's a bike route through to Roma St parklands, then you can go across to the Kurilpa Bridge, but you probably already know that.
I ride from the Downfall Ck bike path thropugh to Roma Street most mornings, so I'm happy to show you the way as long as you don't mind my snail pace.
Permalink Reply by Dirk on February 21, 2012 at 2:05pm Hi Andrew, I'm in Bracken Ridge and have tried numerous routes in to the city. Like you, I'm happy with a less direct route if it means I'm avoiding traffic.
From Deagon you could go through the Boondall Wetlands, ride along the Nudgee Road bike path toward the CBD, then cross Nudgee road and hook onto the the Jim Soorley bikeway, which hooks on to the Kedron Brook bikeway at Toombul shopping centre.
Options from the Kedron Brook bikway to the CBD (and Southbank) are limited, I agree with Aaron's suggestion to take Kedron Brook Rd in to Herston. I got a bit confused through there the first couple of times.
This video by Paul Martin shows a good route from the KBB through t...
The video should commence playing as the KBB passes under Gympie Road.
I'm sure there's another of Paul's videos showing the easiest way from Roma Street Parklands onto the bikeway on the river, however I can't find it!
From there it's smooth sailing.
As I said, it's a slightly indirect route, perhaps up to 10km extra - but considering it avoids SO much road, traffic and hills, I find it actually tires me out less to take the long, scenic way round :).
Let me know how you go - I'm still figuring out cycling on this side of Brisbane myself. I go to uni in Nathan. I've been telling everyone I'm building up to a bike commute there, but it's about 90km return. I've been 'building up' for a year or so now and still not there! Deagon to South Bank is easily doable for a daily commute though I think.
