Cycling in Brisbane Australia
Hi,
I have just started commuting to work from ASPLEY (just near the Hypermarket) to the City.
I am looking for tips on a direct(ish), safe route. I have given up on finding a flattish route and have acknowledged there is no way around the north side hills. Also I have found several good lateral bikeways (East-West) but note there is a definite lack of good bike paths (North-South) that are connected going into the city.
Finally - can anyone tell me the best way to get from Roma Street (Parklands exit) to the Bicentennial Bikeway to get me down to QUT. It seems a nightmare to make that small distance in a safe manner.
Any advice is welcome.
cheers,
Brook.

I have followed that path through to Hamilton Road and up to Old Trouts Road. Not sure how it rates with speed against the suggested route above, which I am yet to try. I am averaging about an hour from just short of the Hypermarket to QUT at the moment.
Between Rode Road to Stafford Road is the killer with respect to the hills. I have tried various routes between those two roads, but have not settled on a preferred route as yet. I do like Trouts Road south of Rode Road to ride on with the wide bike lane/shoulder all the way through.
I was pretty much throwing this out there to see if someone knew of a mythical route, which was relatively flat and direct that I might have missed....
cheers.

I not familiar with your area but can assure that many streets in Brisbane are much steeper than the climb up Mt Coot-tha - sorry, don't know if that helps or hinders!
There is also a route (just footpathspaths and quiet side streets) that takes you from Aspley along the western side of Gympie Rd along Kildonan and Kurango Streets down to Milburn Rd, where you can then follow the bike path down Webster and along Downfall Creek, through Raven Street Reserve to Lanchester and Redgrave Streets Stafford. Then you just have one hill on Trouts Rd.

Permalink Reply by Brook Hastie on March 1, 2012 at 9:04pm Hi Terry,
I have been off the bike for a bit (non-cycling related injury) but am back on now.
From the Aspley Hypermarket, best route I have settled on is pretty much as suggested by Aaron above. Down little cabbage tree creek bikeway to Hamilton Rd. Old trouts road and Trouts rd through to Stafford road. It is the most direct, the climbs aren't the worst around and there is a wide cycle path pretty much the whole way through. Then down stafford road to the cutting through shand street. I am undecided on following the kedron brook bikeway through the crushers league club and through to Kedron brook road - or from Alderley station sticking to enoggera road/kelvin grove road to the entrance onto the enoggera creek bikeway. the latter is quicker, not too bad fighting the traffic, but the increase in fumes you are sucking in is definitely noticeable. From there it's the same either way from the back of Ballymore into the City via the golf course/roma street parklands etc.
That is my lot. Thanks all for the feedback and assistance.
