Cycling in Brisbane Australia

Thought I would start a thread for the local election in the same manner as the one for the state. Post any pro (or anti) cycling election promises you hear.

I noticed, and they "didn't seem to mind". How could they on such a pleasant lazy Sunday? :)

Just saw Ch9 news (I think I have some slight brain damage...).

Anyhoo... they didn't even mention *bicycles* at all when referring to Chris' position, only public transport.

Yet again the media has reinforced my distrust of them. The only outlets I trust are ABC, SBS and the independents. The commercial stations are braindead (as are most of their viewers I suspect...).

Yep - I could just see my back on the TV and a quick glimpse of a red and white velomobile.

My brain always feels like it's slipped a few IQ points if I wind up watching any of the commercial channels.  I generally only look at the CM to see what crap is being peddled.

ABC (and their website), SBS (Cycling Central FTW!) and I'm happy :)  A bit of Fairfax to counter the New Ltd usually gives you the whole spectrum from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Totally agree, Another good news source is Al Jazeera. Though I am glad we (Brisbane Cyclists and others) appeared to make the presence of bicycles for the TV, The old saying "A picture says a thousand words".

Nice to meet you all today :) Mos burger rocks!

Most media outlets are more about creating news stories than reporting the news... I don't trust them at all.

...and now we're taking a further step into the abyss:

While I don't mind ABC and SBS news, their talking heads, current affairs coverage etc is so ridiculously biased I can't stomach it. They're no better than the commercial networks on that score. They pick a side and act like cheergirls for it (usually Labor/Greens it must be said).

The ABC in particular has degenerated into a propaganda arm for the Gillard government.

Glad the gathering went OK, even if coverage didn't bring cycling issues to the forefront.

Aha! Is this is what keeps sneaking past me when I'm out on a ride around Teneriffe way?? It is wild, I love it!

Nice to meet you all today. Great to see a large turnout of children... they are who we need to be building the future for, not all the old farts who (so far) have made a right mess of it!

Ladies and Gentlemen from Brisbane Cyclist.

Thank you very much for your support today, it was a pleasure meeting you all.  And I enjoyed the ride through the city with you all, it was actually the first time I had been on the bike in a while.

It was also very novel riding through the city with a bunch of children and a red velomobile as a "Sag" wagon (thanks Paul!).  I was at the Roar grandfinal tonight so I am yet to see the Channel Nine coverage, but yes very disappointing if they dropped any mention of cycling infrastructure which made up most of what I had to say.

I think JAC radio will do a much better and far more thorough job, and they will get the message across to the people that count - the youth - the people of the future.

It wouldn't be the first time an interview of mine has been hacked to bits.

Thanks again everyone, take care, stay safe out there.

Chris Carson.

Ok now I'm shocked. Noticed in the news (Courier Mail no less) that when recapping the two major parties election promises the cycling infrastructure promises are listed in a very short list. It almost comes across as cycling being a major promise from both major parties..

Please tell me not to get my hopes up that we will get some decent cycling infrastructure out of this election? Or maybe I should buy shares in whatever company makes the BAZ stencils :-)

Well, I sure wouldn't buy shares in the people who run the old and new toll tunnels!
