Cycling in Brisbane Australia

Riding to work today (BN airport) I went for a change of scenery via Kedron Brook Bikeway to Toombul, crit track then up the dirt track to Nudgee Rd. While turning left from Nudgee Rd to the airport roundabout I noticed one of our favourite "green bike paths" coming from the west along the East West arterial.

Does anyone know if there is an on road bike lane from Sandgate rd along the EW arterial to Nudgee rd?  From Nudgee rd on  and thru the airport roundabout the bike lane is quite ok, safe etc.

If I could access a safe on road bike track from Sandgate rd it would open up another alternative route to the airport.

sorry for duplication!!

Duplicate? What duplicate? :p

I also noticed it when visiting the intersection and DFO carpark (eww!) in November after my second ride to Redcliffe - a very good day overall. 7 November 2011 NearMap definitely shows the green strip funnelling along a bit of the East-West Arterial - shoulders appear reasonably wide; unlike the older Google Street View imagery closer to earlier construction.

However, I'm wondering what the speed limit is? Guessing it'd be better than the ~70km/h section of Wynnum Rd and still be easier than Nudgee Rd and Sandgate Rd - I can only slowly footpath Nudgee Rd (haven't seen the southern end of Sandgate Rd but if it's anything like that of Deagon, it's again "shared path" travel for me).

Otherwise, I found my first visit to that part more or less rather pleasant (after reading earlier reports here and studying the Street View / aerial maps). Didn't actually make it to the airline terminals as Toombul Police Beat unexpectedly called to inform that somebody had kindly handed them my dropped Go Card sleeve with essentials!

Yesterday I dropped family off at the airport and noticed some green paint on the EW arterial between Sandgate Rd and Nudgee Rd.  At the moment the speed limit is 40/60 because of roadworks.  I suspect when it opens up it'll be at least 70.  It may be 60, but given the road design and the area and its purpose, I suspect most traffci will be doing at least 80 irrespective of the signed limit.

glad you got your cards back too!

Yeah looks likely to be 80 for many drivers (hopefully no more) - until it gets speed traps or congestion. ;) At least there should be no (regular) parked cars to dodge!

Did you get to see whether the shoulder was consistently wide on the stretches without green paint?

The recovery (after discovery) of the lost cards was certainly a pleasant surprise - initially thought I dropped them way back in Redcliffe but then worked out it was probably nearer to Albert Bishop Park - voicemail was very hard to hear through all the traffic noise. The $20 note also remained so it's good to know there are still many nice people around. I usually carry in the sleeve my debit card, Go Card, CityCycle card and cash notes (when available).

I think the shoulders are consistently wide but the actual road would be a bugger to get to or off at either end. Sandgate Rd's on-road bike path from Nundah (where we had coffee yesterday) stops short of there, and there,s no easy approach from any other direction. Before construction of Airport Link the Kedron Brook bike path meandered through thick bush land and cyclists could pop up right at the intersection of Sandgate Rd and the EW Arterial. It may be that after construction a bike path to join up with the EW Arterial may be reinstated.
Hopefully the Airport Link will have something to offer cyclists! Really enjoyed yesterday, thanks for the route heads up, I'll give that a run this week. Must do it all again sometime soon!
