Cycling in Brisbane Australia
Hey all
I'm working in the same place for a few weeks in Oxley. The public transport scenario is horrid and driving in the traffic is doing my head in.
The only ways I know to get here though are direct, main roads that I don't really fancy doing on the bike with a backpack on.
Anyone got any good local knowledge they could share ? I'm quite comfortable with routes to the city, Southbank or Annerley if they make some good jumping off points but the second half to Oxley is out of my sphere of knowledge.
Any thoughts ?

Permalink Reply by Raymond on February 2, 2012 at 11:25am Out of the pursuit of laziness and no existing opposition to my previous suggestion, this bit for Indooroopilly to Oxley still looks okay. I'll re-emphasise not getting lost south of Indooroopilly as there are a lot of busy roads to inadvertently end up battling should you take a wrong turn...
Text description follows for other options between the city and Indooroopilly, as right now I'm having some difficulty drawing the actual route on a map.
One shortcut to St Lucia / Indooroopilly from where you're starting as you've already alluded: cut south along Annerley Rd (starting near Stanley St & Vulture St, Woolloongabba), head over the Eleanor Schonell Bridge and then get onto the Esplanade/Hillside Tce/Lambert Rd section (as per river loop).
Bikeway alternatives if you don't feel like the Bicentennial Bikeway or Annerley Rd can be the SE Bikeway and west towards Annerley Rd, then north to the Eleanor Schonell Bridge. There is also now a shared bikeway open between St Lucia and Indooropilly now but it requires frequent braking for driveways, corners and vegetation debris.
Were these some of the main roads you were thinking of? It seems almost more direct than the car option.
No the main road I was thinking about was ipswich rd :)
I'll have a look at those suggestions, thanks!
Permalink Reply by Paul Martin on February 2, 2012 at 1:08pm I reckon your best bet would be to cross the river at UQ (Eleanor Schonell Bridge), making use of the elevated bikeway that goes past & behind the PAH.
Then ride towards Indooroopilly, crossing on the Jack Pesch (cycle/ped) Bridge. From there just use the quiter back streets (or you could ride on Oxley Road) to get to Oxley.
That's the way I'd do it.
Sounds interesting.
How does one get on to the bikeway ? Could I come at it from O'Keefe st ? Or get on it near the beginning of the motorway at wollongabba ?
Permalink Reply by mib on February 2, 2012 at 3:31pm The elevated bikeway starts in O'keefe St just down the hill, towards the PH, from the freeway bikeway. It is part of the bus bridge.
The way Paul said is the way I would go.
Permalink Reply by Paul Martin on February 2, 2012 at 3:37pm Yes, as mib says, you enter it via O'Keefe Street here. It takes you over Ipswich Road & behind the PAH and up to Annerley Road.
Just before entering Annerley Road I hop onto the footpath and cycle across the bridge over the railway line. Then I cross Annerley - Noble - Cornwall Streets at the lights (2 phase cross) and ride up to the Eleanor Schonell Bridge via the footpath on the western side of Annerley Road. It's then just a simple left hand turn onto the path leading to the bridge.
