Cycling in Brisbane Australia
Well just finished doing a checkup/service on my bike and the wife's for the Brissie to the Bay ride tomorrow. A good clean and maybe a little wax to shine them up is next I think.
I only doing the 50km basically as SAG vehicle for my wife and the wife of a friend of mine. And a good chance to stretch out the muscles before the Gold Coast Marathon next Sunday.
Anyone else here doing the ride? I heard that a certain Red Velomobile might be doing the 100km and is hoping not to have to play doctor this time :-)

I don't usually go in for big paid rides, so hadn't paid enough attention to know it was on. I was though planning on doing the Melburn Roobaix down in Melbourne tomorrow, but being sick for damn weeks meant that I didn't want to go down and do that either.
I'll most likely head out towards the bay and then south, so I may see you out there.

...although another rider hit the SAME concrete pinch point that that rider hit last year. I hate those things. They don't calm traffic and they make it dangerous for cyclists, particularly the ones that have no bypass for bikes, squeezing everyone into a small gap instead. Grrr... What does calm traffic is limiting the rat running by filtered permeability in suburban streets... that's a rant for another thread! ;)
I didn't stop this time as he was conscious and talking to the attending police officer and a fellow rider so that was good to see. All in all it was great fun with only a few dodgy drivers (and cyclists!) out there. 99.9% of people were well behaved and some *excellent* driving on display by a BCC bus driver. I shall be including that in my video synopsis of the day. 6 hours of footage (two cameras) and some Garmin data to 'render' - I think I might do that next week. :)
Permalink Reply by Shaun Moran on June 24, 2012 at 6:49pm Had a nice casual ride doing the 50km with my wife and a friend today. Couple of the hills were good to test if my legs still work (check!). I think however I was the only person doing the 50km in a carbon frame bike ....
I did see just about every bad example of cycling riding that I could think of but at the end I'm glad so many people had a go.
Several times during the course (the nice fast bendy bits) I was thinking how nice it would be to zoom through these sections on a Velomobile :-)
Permalink Reply by Shaun Moran on June 24, 2012 at 7:13pm Forgot to mention that I saw a council bus driver that was being a complete idiot. This was in Jurgenson St Wolloongabba and he had cyclists in front and behind him.
He kept on reving the engine of the bus - surging it trying to hurry up the cyclists and get them out of his way. Then when he got to Balaclava St and went to turn right he tried to cross onto the wrong side of the road to avoid some cars waiting to turn right.
Two police mounted on motorbikes yelled at him to stop and couldnt believe what he was doing (they didnt see the engine revving). I dobbed him in to them but they didnt do anything ...
Permalink Reply by Raymond on June 24, 2012 at 9:00pm I just got an idea fragment - somebody should "sponsor" a team of velocops to ride their police mountain bikes in one of these events. Surely, it would be a win-win move. ;)
Permalink Reply by DamianM on June 25, 2012 at 9:42am Where is the pinch point ?
It's it near wello point ? or did you not get out that far ?
Permalink Reply by Paul Martin on June 25, 2012 at 11:45am There were quite a few that were tricky for some to negotiate safely. This is the one at Thornside where the rider was down (same spot where I helped the unconscious rider last year):
He hit the concrete & sign on the left:
Permalink Reply by Paul Stockwell on June 25, 2012 at 11:50am I saw a few idiots around there dive on to the wrong side of the road rather than wait the 5 seconds required to allow the cyclists to safely pass through.
I also watched a few fools in their bogan-mobiles scream past the cyclists from traffic lights, accelerating as quickly as they could beside the line of bikes. Crazy and irresponsible.
Permalink Reply by Paul Martin on June 25, 2012 at 12:01pm You mean on the wrong side of the traffic island??? WTF?
