Cycling in Brisbane Australia
Hi everyone! Brisbane streets are so awesome to ride during festive season like this. As a result, I find myself riding more in the past few days. I see more cyclists on the road too. And then I started thinking... how many rides a recumbent here in Brisbane?
I used to ride a Greenspeed trike for a tour and have recently acquired a Bacchetta high-racer bike. There's been a steep learning curve but I've been loving it so far and started thinking of joining social rides. Based on personal experience, the reaction from DF riders varies a lot seeing a recumbent and I have a feeling they would prefer not to have a recumbent in their bunch rides.
That brings to my question... is there a regular social ride for human powered vehicles in Brisbane? If not, would anyone be interested to form a group? I'm pretty sure there's more than a handful of recumbenteers in Brisbane, and at least some of them are interested in riding in a group?

I was a bit frustrated with my speed when I first got my trike but after 2 weeks and 1000km later I match the speed of my DF hybrid. But the comfort is superb from the first km.

Permalink Reply by Doc Embrey on April 9, 2012 at 6:48pm Well Mr Burns, I was just slothing around today when I read this and was shamed and embarrassed into immediate action ... so made ready the trike, and with wheels squealing and cameras and GPS's blazing I left the 'Bat-Cave', only to be stopped by a neighbour for a chat (nice fellow though). Probably a good thing as I don't usually divulge the exact location of the 'Bat-Cave' on the internet, but it's visible on Google Earth so I guess there is no secret. On the second attempt I portaged the trike down to the nearest convenient bike path and started again, testing out a few video cameras and video GPS apps on the way. When I get my thoughts together (and work out how to process the video into something watchable) I will blog it all and post the video somewhere. Suffice to say I travelled the length of the Kedron Brook Shared Pathway (I live at the western end) and finally circled wagons at the Nundah Crit. Track, where I did a victory lap!

I plan to be at the north end of the Goodwill Bridge at 7am on Saturday, though I'm not confident in traffic yet. Also mis-judged some hills (actually the civil works at Shaw Road - a bit challenging on a trike with slicks and little ground clearance) and tried to change gears under load which has left me with a slightly stretched cable and unable to change onto the small chainring (unless I give the chain a little nudge with my foot), so I need to adjust that and shorten the boom and chain, but none of the above is a show-stopper ... see you Saturday I guess!

Permalink Reply by Terry Burn on April 4, 2012 at 7:24pm Lady sighted on a Greenspeed trike this arvo on Kedron Brook Bikeway near Shaw Rd (eastern side). If I had been 2 min slower there would have been a Greenspeed passing manoevre on the pathway!!
Permalink Reply by Melvyn Yap on April 4, 2012 at 7:32pm I've been noticing quite a number of Greenspeed lately. On average, I see one every week. Half of which were seen at Southbank. I have not seen any other trikes yet.
If it has two flags an a toolbox affixed to the carry rack her name is Marissa (or something similar). Nice lady, she commutes on the trike most days including riding up Kedron Brook Rd of an afternoon.
